Setting up a discovered attack: threat (3)
In this lesson you will learn to set up a battery for a discovered attack, by means of a threat. As you know, with a 'threat' you can think of attacking a piece, a mate threat or threatening to promote. In the examples we will look at an attack and a mate threat.
What do you have to do?
Establish a battery with a threat (attack a piece, mate threat or threat to promote). Then, gain material by performing a discovered attack.
There are three pieces on the e-file. White, by attacking the bishop with 1.Re2, can place a fourth piece on this file and use it to set up a battery with tempo. Black is obviously not obliged to remove the bishop, but if they don't, white captures this piece on the next move. If black does remove the bishop (1...Bg3), then white has a discovered attack with 2.Bxc7+. after 2...Kxc7 3.Rxe8 white has won an exchange (a rook against a bishop or knight) and a pawn.
